Széchenyi István University, at the forefront of the training of telecommunications professionals, and Huawei, the giant of the telecommunications world, have for years been intensifying their continuous collaboration. The Chinese company will make its English-language training programmes available to students free of charge, so increasing the global competitiveness and attractiveness of the Győr institution and improving its position in Higher Education rankings.

Granted accredited status, Széchenyi István University’s Radio Frequency Testing Laboratory can perform electromagnetic compatibility tests and commercial tests according to the standard defined by the Radio Equipment Directive - the latter being the only one in Hungary.

Using international examples and his own talent management experiences, Dr Barna Hanula, Dean of the Audi Hungaria Faculty of Automotive Engineering has developed a paradigm-shifting method for modernizing engineering education with the team of Széchenyi István University. Széchenyi István University, in collaboration with the University of Rhode Island, Kingston, US, is launching from the current semester an English-taught double-degree MBA, offering a unique opportunity in Hungary and in Central Europe. The special feature of the four-semester programme is that participants receive a degree from both institutions. The Pallas Athéné Domus Meriti Foundation (PADME), established by the Hungarian National Bank, is supporting the studies of ten Hungarian students with scholarships.

Cyber security has become a key issue

Cyberspace – i.e. the space for online data traffic and communication - is becoming more and more diverse in everyday life, which is why cybersecurity should be given more and more emphasis. On Wednesday, 10 September, a workshop on this theme was held at Széchenyi István University with representatives from academia, the government and the corporate world.

Széchenyi István University has earned the qualification of “family-friendly workplace” in a tender. The right to use this label was preceded by a thorough procedure.

Dr Péter Földesi, Rector of Széchenyi István University has conferred professorial appointments on Dr Gergely Deli (Ferenc Deák Faculty of Law), Dr György Déri (Faculty of Performance Arts), Dr Tamás Hardi (Faculty of Business and Economics) and Dr Zsolt Kalló (Faculty of Performance Arts). 

In 2017, Széchenyi István University won HUF 1 billion 820 million in European Union funding for the energy development of its sites in Győr. Of these, the administrative building has already been modernized, while other buildings featuring in the tender will be renovated this year and next.

At the joint Demo Day of the Startup Campus and Széchenyi István University in Győr, of the three startups that reached the final, the jury found two ideas worth investing in. The winners each received HUF 20 million from Hiventures Zrt., part of the MFB Group, and Quantum Leap Kft.

Now Győr will always be your second home,” – with these words Dr Péter Földesi, Rector of Széchenyi István University, greeted the newly graduated international students at a ceremony in their honour.

On 1 August 2020, the controlling rights of Széchenyi István University will be transferred from the state to the Széchenyi István University Foundation. The Board of Trustees held the inaugural meeting at the University on Wednesday, 22 July. At the event, Dr Erzsébet Knáb, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, emphasized that the foundation's task and responsibility, in conjunction with the members of the board of trustees and the university community, is the creation of a more flexible and predictable operating environment, ensuring the university's visibility in the global higher education space and the further reinforcement of its international competitiveness. Following the change of model, the institution will contribute as an entrepreneurial university to the development of the national economy.

Széchenyi István University, in an alliance with seven partner universities, has made a successful application for funding in the European Commission's European Universities Initiative. The five million euro grant will cover the costs of joint academic programmes, joint research and projects as well as exchange programmes for students and staff.

Thirty-five English-taught programmes are on offer at Széchenyi István University from September, including the new fully online Master of Business Administration (MBA), which awards graduates with a certificate not only from the University of Győr, but also from the University of Rhode Island, USA.

Students of Széchenyi István University collected the most prizes in the essay competition on the occasion of the International Day of Yoga.

Due to the excellent relations Győr-Moson-Sopron County Council enjoys with China, the Henan Education Office has donated ten thousand masks to the region for educational and social purposes. Of the total amount, 6,300 were received by Széchenyi István University on Wednesday, 6 May.

Széchenyi István University has been counted among the best on the latest list of the Times Higher Education (THE), which ranks higher education institutions according to their economic and social impact and their responsibility. In one category the university has been ranked in the top 200.

21st European Accountancy Week

Széchenyi István University was proud to host the 21^st European Accountancy Week (EAW) from 8-14 March. Students from eighteen universities in fifteen European Countries participated in the week’s programme of events. The coordinating institution of the EAW is the Business Studies Department in the University Institute of Technology A at the Lille 1 University of Sciences and Technologies, France.

Széchenyi István University and Israel can cooperate in the automotive, precision agriculture, as well as in the mechanical, electrical and IT fields - said the institution's management at the meeting to welcome the recently appointed Hungarian ambassador of the Middle Eastern state, Yacov Hadas-Handelsman.

The Open Gates (Nyitott Kapuk) Education Fair was again held in the Aula of Széchenyi István University on Wednesday, 15 January 2020, from 8:00 am until 2:00 pm with more than 4,000 visitors in attendance.

Organized by the Tempus Public Foundation, 11 representatives of 10 Hungarian higher education institutions, the representative of the Hungarian Rectors’ Conference and 3 representatives of the Tempus Public Foundation travelled to Seoul and participated in the “Study in Europe Fair 2019” and the “Second Korea-Hungary Higher Education Forum”. Széchenyi István University was represented by Dr Anikó Zseni, Vice-Dean for Educational Affairs at the Audi Hungaria Faculty of Vehicle Engineering.

On Monday, 2 December 2019, members of the University’s chaplaincy service together with around sixty members of the student body , held a candle-lighting ceremony to mark the beginning of the Advent season.

On Thursday, 14 November 2019, as part of the KOCSIS 90 memorial year, an event was organised to celebrate the 90^th anniversary of the legendary Hungarian football player, Sándor Kocsis, a World Cup top scorer. The founder of the memorial year is Dr Barnabás Kovács, former Hungarian consul general in Barcelona and currently Head of the Innovation and Research Centre of Széchenyi István University in Budapest. The main patron of the event was Sándor Csányi, president of the Hungarian Football Association (MLSZ) and vice president of FIFA and UEFA.

The internationalization of Hungarian higher education was at the centre of the National International Coordinators Meeting held at Széchenyi István University from Wednesday 27 November to Friday 29 November. Thanks to the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme, The University of Győr is making great progress in its internationalization process. The Meeting was a record-breaking event, with nearly three hundred participants arriving from all Hungarian HEIs.

NEW PARADIGMS IN UNIVERSITY COOPERATION WITH COMPANIES

On 13 November 2019 Széchenyi István hosted a full-day Conference titled NEW PARADIGMS IN UNIVERSITY COOPERATION WITH ENTERPRISES. The event was sponsored by the Pallas Athéné Geopolitical Foundation.

Dr László Imre Komlósi, Rector’s Envoy for International Cooperation, acted as moderator to the  Conference.

On 22nd October 2019, the Students’ Union of Széchenyi István University (EHÖK) with the support of  the Stipendium Hungaricum Mentor Network and the Erasmus Student Network, Győr, organised an International Dinner involving over one hundred participants, the majority consisting of international students but also involving Hungarians. The main goal of such events is the promotion of international student integration. In addition, Hungarian students  have the chance to be introduced to elements of other cultures and to sample different culinary specialities from around the world.

On 10 October 2019, in celebration of the Erasmus Days 2019, Széchenyi István University organized an event titled Mobili-TEA, an informal meeting for both our Erasmus and non-Erasmus students.

This was a casual event where, over a mug of tea and biscuits, students could meet former scholarship holders to talk about their experiences and opportunities.

It was also an opportunity for students intending to spend some time studying outside Hungary to take a test of oral proficiency in either German or English. Students were initially able to practice their language skills in a relaxed manner while socializing before proceeding to an interview with a teacher to measure their linguistic ability in a more formal manner.
