For the first time in its history, Széchenyi István University has been included in the Times Higher Education's World University Rankings 2024 by Subject. The latest success in the engineering category confirms that the institution is among the international leaders.
Each autumn, Times Higher Education (THE), one of the leading international higher education ranking organisations, publishes its annual world ranking of the world's best universities in their field. The rankings for 2024, published on 26 October, analyse universities in 11 disciplines according to five indicators - teaching, research, academic publications, internationalisation and industry income. In the engineering category, more than 1,400 universities were ranked, including, for the first time, Széchenyi István University, which means that the institution is among the world leaders in this field.
Zoltán Alföldi, a lecturer at Széchenyi István University, is taking part in a one-year coaching training course of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the University of Delaware, in the framework of which he spent almost a month in the United States. The professional, who has been voted Coach of the Year in Hungary eight times, has been in contact with renowned figures in sports science, with whom he is planning to conduct joint researches.
It is crucial that girls everywhere have the opportunity to learn. This is emphasized by the current and former students of Széchenyi István University in a video created by the institution on the occasion of the International Day of the Girl Child, in connection with the United Nations' fifth sustainable development goal, gender equality.
Making the promotion of sustainability a strategic goal, Széchenyi István University demonstrated its activities in the field of education, research and development and innovation at its own booth and delivering presentations at Planet Budapest, a unique sustainability event in Central Europe. Strict guidelines are needed globally and locally for sustainable tourism - this was one of the main messages of a panel discussion organized by Széchenyi István University at its Budapest Innovation and Training Centre. The event also related to the topic of gender equality, aligning with the United Nations' sustainability development goals.
In January of this year, Széchenyi István University launched the panel discussion series titled "Women in the Family, Society, and Science," providing a platform for female role models to share their experiences of professional success, determination, and their significant roles in society. The topics closely relate to the United Nations' sustainable development goal of gender equality, both due to the importance of the topic and because the Győr-based institution is a member of the United Nations Academic Impact initiative.
Széchenyi István University has secured a place among the top 400 universities in the European rankings, published on 20 September by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), an international higher education quality assessment organization. The institution's success is primarily attributed to its excellent corporate reputation and high interest among international students in part-time study programmes.
QS, one of the two largest international organizations that assess higher education institutions, released the European university rankings for the first time on 20 September. Széchenyi István University is included in the ranking, occupying the 382nd position.
Széchenyi István University in Győr is hosting an event based on the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) LinQ Catalyst methodology from 19 to 21 September, focusing on the exploration of unmet healthcare needs as the first step in developing a portfolio of research projects. The goal is to bring as many of these projects to fruition as possible, contributing to the advancement of medical science and improvement in health-related outcomes. During the event, 12 Catalyst EU fellows, scholarship recipients from seven countries, will be assisted by an equal number of mentors from the United States, Germany, Spain, Luxembourg, and Hungary.
Széchenyi István University hosted the international workshop of the Horizon Dalia EU project recently, which was attended by nearly sixty participants from nine countries. The aim of the workshop was to find solutions to restore, protect and conserve our water ecosystems. As part of the programme, participants also visited key sites of the Szigetköz rehabilitation.
In the spirit of strengthening the international and sports relations of Széchenyi István University, the U20 ice hockey team of Ingolstadt, the twin city of Győr, visited the institution. The young sportsmen and sportswomen got to know the modern infrastructure of the University of Győr and the diverse opportunities it offers.
The Audi-supported U20 youth ice hockey team from Ingolstadt, Germany visited Széchenyi István University. The athletes took part in a campus tour, where they discovered the modern infrastructure and academic environment of the institution, as well as the varied and high-quality study opportunities it offers. The staff of the International Programmes and Alumni Centre also presented the university and the very close cooperation with Audi Hungaria, which goes back several decades. They also had the opportunity to get a brief taste of student life, as they were able to take part in the ongoing Freshers' Week events.
Within the framework of the Erasmus programme, Széchenyi István University has announced a supplementary round of scholarship applications for its students for the upcoming academic year. Those who are not inclined to go alone need not miss out, as they can travel to a foreign university with friends or fellow students. The application deadline is 1 October.
The collaboration agreement signed on 31 August between Széchenyi István University, Győr, and thyssenkrupp Components Technology Hungary holds the promise of joint research, patents, and the potential creation of spin-off businesses. The collaboration is linked to the Scientific and Innovation Park project initiated by the University.
The Széchenyi István University Foundation is expanding its activities with two campuses in Zalaegerszeg and Budapest, where it is establishing scientific and research-development campuses. In accordance with tradition, the academic year at Széchenyi István University, on both the Győr and Mosonmagyaróvár campuses, starts with a fantastic "zero week" with grand-scale events to ensure freshers get to know each other and the University. The aim of these events is also to forge a real sense of community among the participants by the end of the camps, as the newest members of the Széchenyi family.
Széchenyi István University will host the Drone Racing World Cup Hungary 2023 international competition from 25 – 27 August, which also serves as the final round of the Hungarian championship. Near the Győr campus, pilots from ten countries, including members of the Hungarian national team, will pilot drones in exciting races for the enjoyment of the spectators. The event is free to attend.

Organised by Széchenyi István University and Edutus University in Tatabánya, in cooperation with Cloud for Intelligent Airplace Zrt. and the Hungarian Drone and Multirotor Association, the Drone Racing World Cup Hungary 2023 international competition will take place in the vicinity of the Győr campus on 25-27 August. On the course set up in the meadow near Aranypart II, drones piloted by racing pilots will be competing against each other. The event is free of charge and all are welcome to attend.
Nearly 120 young people from 27 countries around the world participated in the Young Amateur Radio Operators Summer Camp (YOTA) held at Széchenyi István University from 5 to 12 August, 2023 with the aim of securing the future of amateur radioing as a sport. In addition to professional development, the programme provided an excellent opportunity to build international contacts and cross-cultural friendships. Playing an important role in the development of the next generation of radio amateurs, the Radio Club of Széchenyi University is also a key player in the community.
Instead of a relaxing vacation, 31 talented engineering students invested in their future by choosing the summer programme organized jointly by Audi Hungaria and Széchenyi István University. During the unique four-week training programme, these young individuals worked on current industrial tasks such as the examination of synthetic fuels and the simulation of electric vehicle batteries. The success of the project-based, practical concept is evident as over half of the participants received internships or full-time job offers from Audi Hungaria upon completion of the camp.
Two officials from the more than 120-year-old San Beda University in Manila have visited Széchenyi István University. Father Kelemen Sárai-Szabó, Prior of the Saint Maurus Benedictine priory in Győr, and University staff gave the representatives of the Philippines Benedictine institution a guided tour of the Győr campus.
In two and a half years, Audi will compete in Formula 1 for the first time with a power unit that Dávid Szegletes is also involved in designing. The young development engineer was prepared for this extraordinary task by his education in Vehicle Engineering and the student competition team of Széchenyi István University.
